Precautions
In recent years, accidents have been increasing in involving pedestrians and bicycles. Since pedestrians are vulnerable road users, cyclists bear a greater responsibility. The following are the main precautions to keep in mind.
- Customers to be able to ride a bicycle safely, be in good health, and be familiar with Japanese traffic laws as outlined below.
- Since pedestrians can suddenly change direction, you should pass them at the slowest possible speed when they are walking near your path. Pedestrians are more vulnerable in traffic than cyclists, and the law provides them with greater protection.
If a sidewalk is divided into a bicycle lane and a pedestrian walkway, use the bicycle lane. - If there is no separation between the roadway and the sidewalk, ride along the edge of the roadway. In Japan, bicycles must ride on the left side of the road, just like cars.
- When placing bags or backpacks in the front basket, put any straps into the bag so they can not dangle. If strap becomes entangled in the wheel, the front wheel will suddenly stop, and the rider will be thrown forward. If an accident occurs for this reason, the tour company will not be held liable for any injuries to customers or pedestrians, or for property damage, and customers will be responsible for the cost of bicycle repairs.
- In the unlikely event of an accident or other incident, the guide will handle the situation on-site and arrange for hospital care; however, the guide is not liable for any resulting costs. We recommend that international visitors will take travel insurance in advance.
